Back in August we discussed how Tommy Hilfiger is reinventing itself and slowly trying to become relevant again - here. Now, we have Hilfiger debuting his spring 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week in a way that catches our attention, grabs hold, and makes us realize why he is an American icon. The collection of classic Americana style presents fresh shorts and trousers that are every bit current. Light knitwear is present along with blazers and suiting that showcases tailoring that we haven't seen from Tommy in quite a while. Patriotic in every way, the color palette is very much Red, White, and Blue...in multiple variations and given his new found likeness to DC I must say that I am not surprised. The Obama's have inspired a new wave of interest in our fair city making me feel like every bit the attention whore. Tommy Hilfiger seems to be gaining more and more momentum as the seasons come. Don't call it a comeback but in essence thats what it is.

New York Fashion Week | Michael Kors Spring 2010

Michael Kors struck two cords with his spring collection, one for classics and one for futuristic modernism. Seems like a contradictory, but whatever the reason this is a contradictory that Im willing to get my hands on. While the woman were inspired to be look of Lady Gaga, the theme unintentionally spread to the menswear side with sleeveless jackets and knits with zipped seams. Furthermore, such details of waistbands throughout connotes a avant-garde look, only to be evened out with precise color schemes and straight-forward suiting. Kors is self-infected by classic American glamour, so it comes as no surprise that a classic mood in seen throughout, but joining that with a more non-traditional sense is both fun, unexpected, and a great change in pattern. Silhouettes remains basic, for the most part, with the exception of parachute pants and a drawstring-equipped utility jacket that go out of the way to make a difference. With such fun texturing as a suit with a bleach-splatter print and another with marble pattern that looked like camo, the collection can simply be described as classically fashion-forward.

New York Fashion Week | Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2010

The pinnacle of fashion week for most, Marc Jacobs debuted his Spring 2010 collection in pure Jacobs fashion...late. Should we expect anything less? Jacobs seems to have went back to his roots with the collection, returning to exciting and fresh looks that are modern and trendy, opposite of the current that we have been seeing. Inspired by the 80's - if the prints didn't give it away - the range is hip and young, fun and wild. Bright colors are seen throughout, accompanied by fitted pants, mid-length shorts, and conservative and wide fit tops. Sweaters are present, along with tees, blazers, and outerwear. Exciting in every way, the collection exudes an unexpectancy in every piece and while this is a great change from what everyone else in the industry is doing, I have to wonder how long the collection will be relevant.

Vast and able, Michael Bastian continues in his ode for perfection in a wide variety of formats with his spring 2010 collection. Inspired by the way Latin men blend machismo and emotion, Bastian gives way to an aesthetic that has always been there but only now being proclaimed. With notable pieces that include beach-bum cutoffs with boxer shorts showing out underneath and a braid-trimmed jacket in natural canvas(this showcases the variety), Bastian exudes masculinity that remains accessible. Glimpses of nostalgia are there while formalwear, beachwear, and much more reign prevalent. The collection is all over the place, to say the least, but joins together in the contrast that is formal and casual. Michael Bastian is open for business.

Proving that fashion and athleticism can be equally functional, Yohji Yamamoto continues to excel in his collaboration with ADIDAS. Traditional for a sportswear collection, the range doesn't stop there and goes above and beyond to a fashionable aesthetic that favors basics and turn them into much much more. Most notable are the mesh nets that are every bit relaxed, plaid shirts that are over-extended, and atypical scarves that are hard to figure out. While Yohji Yamamoto allows the sportswear element to shine through, make no mistake about it...this is a fashion-forward collection.

Simple, with sporadic subtle tan patterning, Patrik Ervell presents a collection that showcases personality while remaining uncomplicated. Timeless through and through, nostalgia can be interpreted throughout with a pale color palette and traditional pieces. The silhouettes are kept slim and pieces are straight to the point, something that has been showcased in volumes this season and speaks to be effective. Fresh in every way, the collection remains current and with traditional looks like this, what else could be expected.

Victor Glemaud's spring 2010 collection is a far cry away from that of his fall 2009, in more ways than one. Noticeably, the collection features eccentric color combinations that bring a fresh, spring outlook to things. Then there is there are the multitude of collaborations that contributed to expanding his knit-obsessed collection. Enlisting the help of some great talents - Quiksilver helped with the lower region in the convention of colorful board-shorts, Gitman Brothers provided tops that feature contrast-collars, and Mackintosh gave what was needed...coats. With Rome as his inspiration, patterns are found throughout along with bold lines and basic silhouettes. Abandoning his strong suit was never an option, with Glemaud including minimal knitwear, the icing on top of the cake of a collection full of great collaborations and quality craftsmanship.

We reviewed Thom Browne's Spring 2010 collection here but what we failed to mention was the brilliance that are the accessories he included, notably the briefcases. Hardcase and basic in shape, they are embezzled in seashells that offer a casual color palette yet intricate detailing and a modern outlook.

Loden Dager has never been a brand that I felt the need to keep on my radar, but given their clear attention to detail for spring 2010 Ill have to update my priority list. Without a doubt, basics are the big new thing - or old, depending on how you look at it - but Dager approaches this aesthetic in a way that translates to a basic being just as intricate a piece as haute couture. With a color palette of stale neutrals and sporadic splashes of hues of blue and green, the collection is a harbor for relaxed pieces that cross with suiting. Patterns are present and detailed in the origin of textiles from Peru and Central America, jumpsuits make a surprising appearance, wovens add humor, and shorts suffocate the range. With silhouettes that fit loosely against the male physique, the collection exudes the relaxed mood that goes along with spring while continuing to showcase styles that will remain essential throughout the season.

This season, Thom Browne went with a different mode of action, not only in presenting at his New York store on Hudson Street but also in the notable absence of his signature suiting that we love so much. Deciding to put more focus on a wider variety of options - to say the least - the collection is one that fails to have any clear direction but delivers on providing pieces that are fashionable, largely fashion-forward, and possibly a bit not commercial enough. Silhouettes are all over the place with great cuts, bold colors and prints, cropped bell bottoms, skirts, and outerwear galore. To gain a true appreciation for the collection you must dissect each outfit, because although everything seems everywhere each piece could become quite the addition to your wardrobe. While not exactly "economic friendly", the collection is great in that Browne offers more, expresses more, and delivers more. Is anything wrong with that? I think not.

The economy has hit us bad, and the fashion industry isn't immune at all, which is why Shipley & Halmos decided upon presenting their spring 2010 collection via short film, an interesting modem to get their point across. During the film contrasting pieces adorned models bodies, of which included casual outerwear and knits against formal suiting, trousers, and tops. Tailoring remains intact and if anything this collection proves that Shipley & Halmos are a force to be reckoned with.

New York Fashion Week | Richard Chai Spring 2010

Richard Chai is vastly becoming a favorite of mine, given he progresses more and more each season togethers a mixture of sophistication and lax. Suiting is ever-present but casual with layered blazers with cardigans and billowy trousers. Silhouettes are balanced yet laid-back which is a surprising twist from the norm. With a color palette of hues of gray, white, and blue, the collection offers great versatility with sheer and thin fabric - an ode to spring - and an urbane look that captures the essence of a man with ease. Richard Chai goes far from the trend this season and with great avail, he succeeds.
