Harmonious with a perception that has a grip on our society like Anna Wintour has on her Prada, a visit to a predominately gay neighborhood would resonate a sudden style enlightenment. Dropping by Dupont Circle should yield such sights as those that one would expect from the Montenapoleone, in Milan. And word on the street is, the fashionably challenged men and women should flock there like herds, notebook in hand. Lets get one thing straight, all gay men are not stylish! This is a myth - and the guy to the left is clear evidence of such.
Its not hard to backtrack the origin of this myth. The myth that is the Stylish Gay Man is older than you, me, and anyone alive today - think back to Louis XVI whose failure to consummate his marriage resulted in homosexual rumors, it started before that; its worth noting that he was exceptionally stylish. Since the beginning of mankind homosexuality has been associated with a vain and perhaps more-put-together aesthetic. And the generalization is without proper claim - Edward II, Quentin Crisp, Liberace, and many others only strengthened this myth, and as a result it waltzed right into the 20th and 21st century.
"This idea comes from how awareness of homosexuals grew over the last 40 or 50 years," says designer Isaac Mizrahi. "To someone who only knew of three gay people, it looked like all gay men were stylish."
In American, more specifically, the first openly gay men that society accepted as public figures were fashion designers. More so than that, TV in the eighties and nineties created this stereotypical 'gay sidekick' who opted to giving sartorial advice to their less-than-stellar girlfriends. Fast forward a decade or two and series like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy emerged into the world, and along with it the Verdis and the Cojocarus.
And although I see no end in sight for the Stylish Gay Man myth, we now have gay public officials who are beyond sartorial help and other public figures who put fault in the myth entirely (note, the above picture). Only now we have a new myth to diffuse, that all stylish men are gay. Now that's a twist for your ass, and mine.

Exclusive Report | No Jimmy Choo for H&M in DC
Labels:
Personally District Cut
/
Comments: (8)

The Jimmy Choo for H&M collection has received world renown attention and grown into an over-advertised range, no doubt taking on a life of its own. Obtaining more press in only a few months time than H&M and Jimmy Choo have independently in a year, it has caused loads of lusting women and men to wait with much anticipation and impatience for its November 14 debut in select stores. So its understandable that I have a bit of a bone to pick with the retailer for what is a major slap in the face for the DC area. Heck, I have an enormous amount of rage built up and my only hope is that I can conjure it up to do something productive...like write a big fat writ of complaint to the 'folks upstairs' at H&M about the major blow.
While there are multiple H&M locations in the DC area, not one of them has been selected to initially carry the Jimmy Choo for H&M collection - and by initially, its worth noting that they don't give any foresight as to when the District will get its share of Jimmy Choo goods, or whether we will at all (SLAP!). I find this especially appalling considering we are a major city. Scratch that, we are the city; the nation's capital; the seat of the government; the representative of the United States to the rest of the world. So how exactly is it that you look at a map and decide to disregard shipping such an over-advertised and produced collection to the city with the big arrogant star on it? Baffles me.
But okay, Ill give them the benefit of the doubt that we don't deserve such special privileges just because we are the nation's capital (even though we do). They add insult to injury, however, when you factor in how successful H&M locations perform in this area. I may not have numbers, charts, graphs, or a contact for the Chief Financial Officer of Hennes & Mauritz, but what I do have is common sense. And common sense says that H&M obviously does well in the DC area considering new locations keep popping up faster than you can pronounce Hennes & Mauritz. In fact, today a new H&M is opening in Lakeforest Mall (the first 100 shoppers will receive an H&M Access to Fashion Pass with random values of $10, $25, $50, $75, or $100) - add that to the Georgetown and Metro Center locations in DC, and countless stores in the nearby suburbs. Don't give us more stores if we can't reap the full benefits! Not only is it an "F-You" to all your loyal costumers (of which I am one of them), but it also is a horrible business-policy that will only result in a major financial-miss. In the words of Miranda Priestly, "Its just baffling to me..."
And my intent for this post isn't to start a full-on boycott of H&M locations in DC because I will continue to shop at H&M, with anger in my heart all the while. Its really just to vent.
But let me end by saying this...while First Lady Michelle Obama is filling the White House with pieces from J. Crew and Talbots for the entire First Family to wear to White House events, H&M can forget their probable-hopes of getting her 'money maker' right to bear arms in any of their garments (because anything those arms are spotted in instantly flies off the shelves and make money) since DC area H&M's get the short end of the stick.
So how will you cope with being overly-teased for no reason? Me, Ill cope by having unhealthy, copious amounts of sex with stranger. But that's just me...I'd advise you to have lovely lustful dreams of what could have been.

Will The Real 50 Cent Please Stand Up
Labels:

So, apparently extreme photoshop isn't limited to females and Ralph Lauren models. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson appears in the campaign for his new fragrance, Power, a victim of heavy photoshop - evident by his missing stomach tattoo, doll face, narrower frame, and missing shirt buttons or button holes. Why not just pick a different model considering those tattoos (not to mention his face) are somewhat symbolic to his persona. And something tells me the gone-soft-rapper didn't object, he probably had a hand in the bidding. If even the homophobic-alpha-male types are photoshoping it up to a false reality...is there any hope for humanity? Can all the real men stand-up!

Style Report | The $300 Question
Labels:

Comments: (3)
"A moment of silence, please, says the New York Times, for ultra-expensive designer denim. The $300 pair of jeans has come down with a bad case of recessionitis, and despite the best attempts of marketers, PR people, and aggressive salespeople, it's pretty much died.To which we say: Hold on. Those $300 jeans, as the article argues, may well have dropped to $200. And we’re the last guys who'd say that’s a bad thing. But really? $300, pricey? Have you been to Paris lately? Which brings us to Christophe Decarnin’s motorcycle jeans, from his menswear collection for Balmain, which at $1,100 are the heir and successor to Tom Ford's $990 pair (the ones with the 18-karat gold button)—and which, we gotta say, are really cool.
They’re perfectly faded, frayed, and whiskered, but don't let the lived-in look fool you—Balmain's whole collection is expertly made in the house's small Parisian atelier. And, yes, that comes at a price. But when a pair of jeans all but promises to transform you into a Stooges-era Iggy Pop, maybe it’s a price worth paying. Steep, yeah—but still cheaper than a pair of 501’s and a motorcycle...
— Matthew Schneier
Here's the thing...I agree whole-heatedly with Schneier, but I'm not sure if that constitutes a problem or not. To some, a $300 pair of jeans is pushing it (especially when you can go get something "basic from K-Mart," Anna's words, not mine). But then there are people like me, who don't splurge, rather look for quality. Considering men only need maybe...two pair of jeans with the right fit, grade, and wash. And that's what $300 will get you in menswear. On the other end, you can continue to buy $20 jeans from, oh I dont know...K-Mart but in the end its a complete waste. They won't last long and will eventually fade - that's $20 down the drain. And it ends up being a reoccuring cycle. Its comes down to looking at the bigger picture rather than the instant polariod. Is that so wrong? or am I justified by my $300 purchase?

Style Report | Halloween Displays

Without sounding too dorky, I appreciate store window displays that make me stop and look - after all, that is what they are meant for. Window displays are meant to garner attention; Halloween is a time of the year where retailers really put extra attention into relevance, detail, and attention grabbing. No other place is this more on display than Bleecker Street in the West Village of NYC. A mecca of retail heaven, their Halloween window displays go to prove that fashion doesn't have to give way to fright and inspiration can be found in all corners of existence. Take Ralph Lauren's "Double-L-R" store(above), for example. Their use of skeleton derived mannequins not only paints a vivid picture of controversy that has always plagued the industry but also makes use of the holiday and time of the year with oranges, browns, grays, and reds - resembling the metamorphosis of the leaves during fall. And leave it to Marc Jacobs(below) to go above and beyond in making a statement. I must admit, their floor-to-ceiling wall completely covered with bones is very cool.

LAST DAY | Saturday Giveaway: A Gentleman's Watch
Labels:

Comments: (18)

Long overdue, I have finally made the decision to roll out what you love. No, not a young and eager female intern on the Hill - that would be entirely inappropriate and might even land you somewhere in Argentina following in the footsteps of so many others(would the real Governor Sanford please stand up). I'm talking about a giveaway! And ss much as I love offering up free swag for my readers, I am not a component of cheap and quality-less things(*uh hum cough* young and eager female interns on the Hill) so when it came time to reintroduce our giveaway series, it easily became a task worth noting. I searched high and low - even stopping to look at an Hurmes(yes, that is how it was spelled) briefcase that a street vendor was selling - but nothing seemed appropriate for the dedicated readers of District Cut, and the budget added complications as well(the Gucci loafers that I originally thought of were too much stimulation for the economy). Then it dawned on me...all my talk on the need for bare essentials should be reflected upon in this giveaway. What's more of a bare essential for a professional gentleman than a quality watch?
A watch is a piece meant to be subtle so not to distract from your entire look, but noticeable enough to make a statement. And above all else, everyone needs to know the time. Men's Watches come in many different forms - analog, digital, informal, formal, and the list can go on and on. Staying in sync with bare essentials, it only makes since to go with a piece that is an easy common ground between the two - formal and informal. Orient Watch's model 2ER00001B is a great example of a transition piece between formal and informal; its use of stainless steel is a direct reasoning for this. Their CEM5J005W model(pictured below) is a great transition piece as well, and has a sense of youthfulness that is unsurpassed. Best of yet, it won't land you in the trouble that a young and eager female intern on the Hill will; the Orient Watch CEM5J005W is today's giveaway.

Features: it's automatic (doesn't require batteries!), water resistant up to 50meters, stainless steel bracelet and case, day/date display and it has luminous hands and markers.
To enter this giveaway follow District Cut on Twitter(if you dont have a twitter, what are you waiting for...), and send us a reply stating what your favorite trend is for the fall. Don't feel like making the trek all the way to Twitter, leave your entry in the comments on this post. The winner will be announced on Thursday.

A true style icon in every way, Fisher, along with his wife Doris, founded the Gap. "They were one of the first to treat basics as fashion," said Cynthia Cohen, president of Strategic Mindshare, a Los Angeles retail consulting firm. "Gap was the first to realize that everybody needs a good pair of khakis, everyone needs jeans and a good quality white T-shirt." I credit Fisher as single-handily influencing my personal style today - one that favors basics substantially. Fisher passed Sunday of cancer at his San Francisco home, the company said. He was 81. His influence will forever live.

In light of some recent unforeseeable circumstances, we have been presented with a great opportunity that opens many doors as well as challenges. As difficult as it may be and as emotionally attached we have grown to kiD GQ, we embrace change and the exciting venture it offers. With that being said, I would like to proudly announce that as of September 14, 2009 we will be known as District Cut. While the name change is entirely due to circumstances that we do not wish to challenge nor discuss, District Cut reflects our transformation, growth, and identity as DC's Premier Men's Fashion Blog. The content remains the same, the commitment to perfection is still intact, and our respect for the city of DC and fashion industry will always remain true. You will still have the availability to access District Cut via http://kidgq.com/ until the end of October, however, our new site URL is http://www.districtcut.com/ and we encourage you to start using it now. Fashion week is on the horizon and I couldn't be more excited, more inpatient, and a bit more frightened. Collection after collection, kiD GQ will have the latest reviews and updates from the Bryant Park tents and surrounding events. But that is not until next week, lets not get ahead of ourselves. This week, however, we still have the same great and consistent content that you expect from kiD GQ. Fashion's Night Out is this Thursday so expect lots of information on how DC is helping out the fashion industry. Most notably, however, is the return of the 10 Essentials feature. That's right, this week expect a brand new blogger giving you his tips on 10 Essentials for the fall season. This has been a long work in progress and I am very excited to deliver the end results. Furthermore, we are sure to have some much note worthy and important announcements...so stay tuned and have a great week!
