Around the District | DC's Tweed Ride Photos

It was DC's first Tweed Ride
and everyone came out to play,
unfortunately my own academia
kept me away.

Okay, enough of the rhyming. I attempted to write a sonnet...but lets just say I left those skills back in AP English during my senior year of high school. But thanks to Washingtonian, we've got photogenic evidence of the creative-genius that was the DC Tweed Ride. View my favorite photos after the jump...Be inspired.

Around the District | DC Tweed Ride

Sundays are usually a smorgasbord of boredom for me but this upcoming Sunday, November 15, will be anything but, thanks to whats shaping up to be a giant love-fest-of-creativity. I'm referring to the DC Tweed Ride. Calling all the Dandies and Quaintrelles in DC - which is an obvious sign of the creativity that will be flowing throughout. Organized by Eric Brewer, head over to the parking lot behind the Bank of America at 722 H Street, NE between 11am-12pm dressed in inspiring turn-of-the-century wardrobe (which can easily be found at Treasury Boutique) with a bike to match. Not to worry if your vehicular-challenged, a selection of vintage bikes will be available for sell starting at $125, not to mention scones and vintage studio portraits. And according to Project Beltway, a parlor will be waiting for you at the end of the finishing line - Marvins located at 2007 14th St.
British tunes on the turntables, prizes and raffles, and I'm sure a nice, old school cocktail if need be. And all benefiting the Arts for the Aging.
Nothing is left for convincing; inspiration just isn't something you turn down. And I'm sure to be inspired by some of the sights that will be present, so make sure its your Sunday's best - my camera is charged and ready for snapping. Be inspired yourself too, and bring some of that Dandiness into your own wardrobe.

Around the District | Three Piece Suit Thursday

It goes without saying that DC tends to get a bad rep for our fashion sense and its quite obvious that we shy away from the fashion forward and stick to classics. But as of recent, things have taken a turn for the better. Fashion Washington is a year old, the U Street-Cooridor participated in Fashion's Night Out, Capitol Hill is looking to help protect the fashion industy, we've got a stylish couple in the White House, and even Anna Wintour is now a presidential appointee and spending time in the District - here. And with classic cuts, silhouettes, and designs on the forefront of the fashion industry right now, it seems the Capitol Hill is looking to take further advantage: Introducing "Three-Piece Suit Thursday".
New York Democratic Rep. Mike McMahon’s male staffers — Danny Hart and Sam Morgante, along with Nathan Morgante, an intern on the Ways and Means Committee — are banning together to embrace the classical movement that is sweeping the fashion industry by embracing the three-piece suit every Thursday in their office. “It was all Nathan’s idea,” according to Sam. “We thought it was a fun way to bring some New York style to Washington. People dress very conservatively here.” Umm...since when did New York style constitute three-piece suits? Im not sure were he is getting his information but he is right in that more conservative pieces are a trend currently, "I would say they’re on the cutting edge of fashion.”
They are not alone, however. Illinois Democratic Rep. Deborah Halvorson’s office has introduced a similar notion: “Three-Piece Suit Wednesdays,” for both male and female staffers, as an unofficial office policy. According to Halvorson's office, "its sharp!"
And alas, just when I thought the politicos were making some ground Rep. Rob Bishop of Utah brings us back down a notch and speaks in terms that seems more familiar with language on Capitol Hill, "My love of vests and sweaters is not a fashion statement. At my size, I need as much clothing to cover my body as possible."
As long as we aren't forced to see too much of a bad thing, im happy.

Start your weekend off right with a stylish event for DC-area men. Meet Tom Julian, "Nordstrom Guide to Men's Style" author, on Saturday, October 24 at Nordstrom Tyson's Corner Center. From 1-3pm he will be signing his book, taking pictures, and speaking to all you stylish gents out there. RSVP here.

Few other places in the DC area have become a iconic institution like Ben's Chili Bowl. It goes without saying that it is a staple; one that DC residence take great pride in. And without doubt, Ben's Chili Bowl has seen its fair share of fashion blessings and disasters - Ive witnessed countless. From the fanny pack clad tourist to the idiots who decide to dress in white and enjoy a chili dog, I owe all of my great memories at Ben's Chili Bowl - that I'm sure we all have - to founder Ben Ali, 82, the founder of Ben's Chili Bowl. His legacy will continue to live on.

On Wednesday night Fenty hosted the "Evenings in Vogue" event, with DC's finest and most stylish in attendance - my invitation must have gotten lost in the mail. Ill let that gaffe past, this time and this time only. Hosted at restaurant Oya, the likes of BET's Debra Lee, Juleanna Glover, Patton Group's Barbara Martin, Jayne Sandman, Cindy Jones, WUSA 9's Angie Goff, and NBC 4's sports anchor Lindsay Czarniak all put on their finest scraps, sipped on champagne, and speculated as to whether Anna Wintour would make an appearance. "I was thrilled to be asked by Vogue to do this event...as a way to highlight the trendsetting fashions of the season," said Fenty of the event. And if your wondering how our fair mayor shaped up, he wore a gray Ermenegildo Zegna suit - amateur at best. Click here for an image.

Around the District | GWFCC Fashion Caucus

If this doesn't prove that DC is vastly gaining ground in the fashion industry then nothing will. The Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce is on the move at trying to create a Fashion Caucus, and its creating quite a splash while doing so. With a purpose for fighting the issues affecting the fashion industry such as copyright protection for apparel and scholarship funds for fashion students, it is actually garnering support and seeing hopes of coming to fruition. With the support of Representatives Diane Watson (Democrat of California), Carolyn Maloney (Democrat, New York), Kendrick Meek (Democrat, Florida), Sheila Jackson-Lee (Democrat, Texas), Eleanor Holmes Norton (Democrat, D.C.), Chaka Fattah (Democrat, Pennsylvania), Rosa DeLauro (Democrat, Connecticut), and House Judiciary Committee chairman John Conyers (Democrat, Michigan), the establishment could possible cement DC as a front runner in the fashion industry and make us even cooler than we already are. Thanks to our neighbors, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, DC has become more fashion centric and despite certain incidents with Mom Jeans, this administration has made DC younger, hipper, and sexier. The Fashion Caucus will only make it official.
